SUMMARY:Homespun Kent: Revolutionary Households
DESCRIPTION:Join us at Seven Hearths\, the 1751 built home of Esther Pratt and Daniel Beebe during the Revolutionary War\, for our summer and fall exhibition in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence!   KHS strives not only to tell the Beebes’s fascinating story\, but to complement Kent’s America 250 committee’s planned schedule of events with a demonstratively tangible connection to the time period.  The exhibition will run from June 27\, 2026 – October 31\, 2027\, but much of what we have curated for the exhibition will remain\, and enhance our permanent exhibition\, most notably the original 1751 store.  An integral component to the larger picture of the 18th century barter economy of Kent and the fifteen years that led to the revolution\, KHS regards the enhanced store as a sister project to our restored fur trading post. The restoration of the post was made possible through a 2009 Historic Structures report\, and a generous grant from the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation.  It is a rare representation of the 18th century trading and barter system\, and according to the Connecticut Trust\, the only other such display exists in northern Maine. \nJoin us Saturdays and Sundays\, 11 AM – 4 PM\, and see for yourselves what Kent was like in the 18th century!  Docents will be available to usher you through\, or you can peruse the extensive story boards on your own.  A 15 minute exhibition video will get you started… \nAdmission is free\, but a $25 donation is recommended for non-members.

SUMMARY:Summer Arts Camp at Seven Hearths Museum
DESCRIPTION:Create\, Explore & Imagine at the Seven Hearths Museum!  Join Local artist Shannon Blanton in this interactive drawing and painting class on the gorgeous grounds of the Kent Historical Society.  Experiment with mixed media projects and creative storytelling techniques in this process-focused\, confidence-building supportive atmosphere.  No prior art experience is necessary – just a creative spirit!  For children ages 6-12. \nBlanton is a visual artist based in Northwest Connecticut who has shown her work in solo and group exhibitions nationally and collected internationally.  She was also named 2026 Reader’s Choice top visual artist by Litchfield Magazine.  Shannon received her BA from Centre College in Danville\, Kentucky in Art History with a focus on medieval iconography and studio work.  She also received a certificate in Appraisal Studies of Fine and Decorative Art from New York University. \nScreenshot

SUMMARY:Search for the Signers of the Declaration of Independence
DESCRIPTION:What started out as a quirky hobby soon became an obsession. During a road trip with friends to Boston\, in a cemetery with three Declaration signers’ graves\, a project was born traveling to and photographing the graves of the 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. It seemed like an easy task. As photos were taken and names checked off the list\, questions arose. Is this where the signer was first buried? Was he moved from an original burial spot? Why did that move happen? Is the actual grave location known? Along the quest\, it turns out that a number of Declaration signers prominent men in their colonies are not interred in their original burial locations. Follow the adventure with some unusual stories\, and discover how many graves were found and how many signers are not really buried where their marker sits. \nJoin us for a cocktail hour book discussion with Jennifer Epstein Rudnick. Rudnick\, a Kent\, Connecticut native\, is an Education Specialist and Park Ranger with the National Park Service at the National Mall and Memorial Parks in Washington\, DC. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting program with Connecticut shoemaker Andrew Rowand as he guides us through the art of handcrafting shoes. Rowand has been a shoemaker for over a decade\, specializing in the recreation of historical footwear from the 17th to 19th centuries. He uses period-appropriate tools\, materials\, and techniques in his craft. Currently\, he is researching and cataloging shoes that have been discovered in early New England structures as part of his work. SUMMARY:Homespun Kent: Makers' Series: Wool Spinning Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Join KHS Trustee Debbie Shifflet-Finton in a demonstration of spinning wool\, the ancient craft of turning raw\, wool fibers into continuous\, usable yarn by drafting (stretching) and twisting them together. It is a highly meditative and creative process\, allowing control of the thickness\, color\, and texture of one’s own unique yarn for knitting\, crochet\, or weaving.  This act is at the heart of our summer exhibit\, Homespun Kent: Revolutionary Households\, metaphoric\, and a powerful symbol of independence: making the yarn for the fabric our own nation.  RSVP director@kenthistoricalsociety.org.
