Christine Adams
Director Christine Adams earned her BA in English from Gettysburg College and a Certificate in Grant Proposal Writing from New York University. She celebrates the connective beauty of natural and historic places, and serves on the town of Washington Connecticut’s Inland Wetlands Commission and Historic District Delay of Demolition Committee. A former Kent Historical Society Trustee, Chris was Development Coordinator for Steep Rock Association, a nationally accredited land trust, and currently serves as a Director for the Lake Waramaug Conservancy and as researcher for the Gunn Historical Museum. Adams is the author of two collections of poetry, Setting the Table in the Age of Reason and Breaking Bread, the latter of which is scheduled for a late 2026 release. She is currently working on an historic memoir entitled Homespun, which outlines the provenance of her 1790 cottage in New Preston, which began its existence as a mill shop. Her most important title by far, however, is mother to Samuel, Elizabeth and Oliver.
Marge Smith
Curator / Archivist Marge Smith grew up in Kent and moved back permanently after obtaining a bachelor’s degree in history from Lafayette College. She joined the Kent Historical Society as a collections volunteer in the mid-1990s, and was hired as its first executive director in 2001. She stepped down from that position in 2014 in order to focus her attention solely on her archivist and curator responsibilities. She is a graduate of CT Humanities’ Professional Basics program, and has won awards for several history exhibits at both the Kent and Sharon Historical Societies. Her passion is the history of the Northwest Corner’s iron industry, and its remaining evidence in the woods in the area. To that end, she is a proud member of the board of the Upper Housatonic Valley National Heritage Area.
Meet Our Esteemed Board

Deborah Chabrian
President
Board President Deborah Chabrian, an award-winning artist, earned a BFA with Honors in Art, at Parson’s School of Design in NYC. Born in Barrington, IL, Deborah moved to Kent in 1986. While Fine Art is her primary focus, she has always had an intense interest in history. When moving to Kent, with her artist/husband Edward Martinez, she immediately began researching the history of their historic house, circa 1783, on Spooner Hill Road. Contacting the Kent Historical Society to gather information, she and Ed soon found themselves on the KHS board, where she began studying Kent’s History in earnest. In 1988 Deborah and Ed led the effort to save the ‘Bull House’ (now known as Swyft) from the proverbial wrecking ball, literally stopping the bulldozer from demolishing one of the oldest structures remaining on the ‘Grate Plain’ of current downtown Kent. They restored the house, and so it still stands today. After a hiatus from KHS to raise her two children, Oliver and Gabriella, she rejoined the board in 2016. During her time away from KHS, she was active in both the Washington Montessori, and the Marvelwood School Parents Association. Now the KHS Board President since 2022, Deborah brings both her passion for history and expertise in Art. Kent has a rich Art History entwined with the town’s history. Deborah loves to connect the dots, finding the personal stories of how Kent’s residents were influential to the larger Art world. For Deborah it always leads back to her interest in the people and stories of Kent. Her mantra, ‘History is Alive’ we live it and make it everyday!

Roger Gonzales
Vice President
Born in Southern Louisiana in 1941, Roger came to Connecticut in 1960. After four years of service in the US Coast Guard, Roger returned to Kent, built a house and cabinet shop and began a successful furniture restoration business. Gonzales has worked for the Wadsworth Atheneum, the Connecticut Historical Society and countelss notable antique dealers all along the East Coast. His work with KHS spans two decades, and he is not retired. In fact, he’s never worked a day in his life but spends his days doing what he loves: preserving history in the form of restoration and reproduction.

William Watts
Treasurer
Bill Watts joined the Kent Historical Society’s Board of Trustees in 2024. A financial and agricultural journalist, he lives in Kent with his wife, Sarah Chase. A lifelong history buff, Bill is especially interested in stories and exhibits that explore how people lived and worked in the past. He has a particular passion for agricultural history and the evolution of farming practices and land use, and has been captivated by Kent’s rich living history since first visiting our town over 20 years ago.
