Homespun Kent: Revolutionary Households
Join us at Seven Hearths, the 1751 built home of Esther Pratt and Daniel Beebe during the Revolutionary War, for our summer and fall exhibition in commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence! KHS strives not only to tell the Beebes’s fascinating story, but to complement Kent’s America 250 committee’s planned schedule of events with a demonstratively tangible connection to the time period. The exhibition will run from June 27, 2026 – October 31, 2027, but much of what we have curated for the exhibition will remain, and enhance our permanent exhibition, most notably the original 1751 store. An integral component to the larger picture of the 18th century barter economy of Kent and the fifteen years that led to the revolution, KHS regards the enhanced store as a sister project to our restored fur trading post. The restoration of the post was made possible through a 2009 Historic Structures report, and a generous grant from the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation. It is a rare representation of the 18th century trading and barter system, and according to the Connecticut Trust, the only other such display exists in northern Maine.
Join us Saturdays and Sundays, 11 AM – 4 PM, and see for yourselves what Kent was like in the 18th century! Docents will be available to usher you through, or you can peruse the extensive story boards on your own. A 15 minute exhibition video will get you started…
